Introduction
This toolbox is intended for PhD students and research beginners at the VU University in Amsterdam.

The purpose of this toolbox is to help you with the essentials to meet the following requirements:
  • Find literature efficiently by defining and implementing an effectively-designed search strategy, which includes
    • Identifying different types and formats of information sources
    • Selecting the most appropriate method to retrieve information
    • Considering the costs and benefits of acquiring that information
    • Evaluating reliability, validity, accuracy, authority and timeliness of the information and sources
    • Revising the search strategy and queries if necessary
    • Taking into account ethical, legal and socio-economic aspects of information usage
  • Organize and manage large amounts of literature by selecting the most appropriate technology for extracting and managing information records
  • Stay up-to-date in your research area by selecting and using the most appropriate technology
  • Publish your research taking into account
    • Usage of the appropriate citation style
    • Laws, regulations, institutional policies and etiquette related to the use of information

This toolbox has a modular structure and can be followed without supervision. 

The Toolbox has been developed by information and education specialists at the VU University Library.
